B. Braun Indonesia Increases Local Drug Production with Environmentally Friendly Innovations
B. Braun Indonesia, a leading pharmaceutical and medical device company headquartered in Germany, is reaffirming its commitment to supporting the independence of the national pharmaceutical industry by producing drugs locally at its manufacturing facility located in Cikampek, Karawang, West Java.
This facility, which was inaugurated by the Indonesian Minister of Health on July 27, 2017, is a production center that combines the latest technology with an environmentally friendly approach.
This year, Braun Indonesia expanded its product line by launching pain-relieving and fever-reducing infusion fluids (analgesic-antipyretic) with innovative semi-rigid container packaging, designed to provide safe, practical and effective medical solutions for healthcare professionals.
"By launching an analgesic-antipyretic infusion solution that is entirely produced domestically, we support the government's program to increase the independence of the pharmaceutical industry and ensuring the availability of essential medicines for the Indonesian people," said Rainer Ruppel, President Director of B. Braun Indonesia. "This is part of our long-term commitment to invest in Indonesia, not only in terms of production, but also in increasing local capacity and technology."
The production of analgesic-antipyretic infusion solution also pays attention to environmental impact aspects. Every step in the production process is supported by environmentally friendly energy sources, including the operation of a 1.2 MwP solar power plant which began operating in April 2024. This solar power plant generates approximately 1,673 GWh of electricity per year, meeting 20-30% of the factory's electricity needs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 705 tons in the first four months of operation alone.
In addition to using renewable energy, B. Braun Indonesia is also committed to reducing the environmental impact of its products, particularly medical waste. Semi-rigid container packaging that uses polyethylene material free of PVC, DEHP, and latex, is an innovative solution. This material is easily biodegradable and can help reduce the volume of medical waste, as well as the risk of environmental contamination.
Semi-rigid packaging also offers various other advantages for healthcare professionals. Its PVC, DEHP, and latex-free material makes it compatible with a wide range of medications. The innovative product design also ensures safety and comfort in use, while minimizing the carbon footprint throughout its production cycle.
With the integration of product innovation and sustainable production practices, B. Braun Indonesia demonstrates its full commitment to B. Braun's global vision to protect and improve people's health, as well as supporting the national target to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2060. For its sustainability initiatives, B. Braun Indonesia has been awarded the PROPER Blue award by the West Java Provincial Environmental Agency.
